One year ago, I crossed the finish line of my first marathon, and now I proudly call myself a marathoner. My next challenge is in November, and this time I’m aiming for something even bigger: a Boston Qualifying (BQ) time for my age group. My journey began after I joined a relay team that ran 82 miles along Missouri's Katy Trail. That experience ignited a new determination in me—not only did I want to run a marathon, but I set my sights on qualifying for Boston.
I've always loved running and competed when I was younger. But like many, life took over, and I hadn’t been running consistently for years. Yet, after that relay, I was hooked again. I trained for my first marathon on my own, relying on research to create a training plan. While I finished with a decent time, I hit a wall in the final six miles—the infamous point where many marathoners struggle. It wasn’t just physical; I hadn’t mentally prepared for the last grueling stretch. That part of the race is where the real test begins. This experience reminds me of how organizations approach data center and cloud migrations. You might find this strange but let me make the case and you’ll understand. Many teams dive into migration projects after extensive research, confident they can manage it all. But just like marathoners who think they've got it covered after mile 20, migrations often hit unexpected roadblocks. According to Gartner, 83% of data migration projects either fail or exceed their budgets and schedules. It's one thing to start strong; it's another to cross the finish line successfully.
In January, I decided to change my approach. I joined Fleet Feet’s Running Club to get more structured training and a motivational boost. I received a tailored running plan, guidance from seasoned coaches, and the accountability that comes from running with a team twice a week. Although I dealt with an injury, I still managed to shave a few minutes off my spring marathon time. Now, as I prepare for my November marathon, I’m reflecting on how the right coaching and support have made all the difference. My coach has not only done this before but also knows the best training plans to maximize my performance. The group coaches offer valuable insights during our long runs each Saturday, giving me tips on everything from pacing to recovery. Meanwhile, my fellow runners keep me on track, motivating me to push harder and stick to my goals. I’m confident that with this level of support, I’ll be ready to hit my target time.
When it comes to cloud or data center migrations, having the right team and experience is just as critical. Sure, you can research best practices and try to build a migration plan on your own but having a “coach” and team who’ve successfully navigated this journey before is essential to ensure success. Many migrations fail because teams underestimate the complexities or hit a wall—like bonking in the last miles of a marathon. At CTM Technology Group, we’ve seen this pattern repeatedly. We know the challenges that arise in the final stages of a migration when the stakes are high, and time and budget are on the line.
At CTM, our methodology is designed to support your organization through every phase of migration, from initial planning to post-migration support. Much like marathon training, it’s about meticulous preparation, experience, and accountability. We’re the coaches who will guide you through your migration, anticipating hurdles and keeping your team motivated, so you cross the finish line successfully—on time and within budget.
The right support makes all the difference, whether you’re aiming for a BQ or a seamless migration. Let CTM help you get across the finish line with confidence.
