Data Center Migration Case Study

Data Center Migration Case Study

Completed 2 data center migrations in 7 months, 2 months ahead of schedule

Migrated 750 application instances and 900 servers in 20 weeks

Decommissioned 430 servers, 40 applications, and reduced the footprint for 148 applications

The Objective

THE OBJECTIVE

Due to a recent company acquisition, two data centers were targeted for closure to save millions in synergies by relocating all IT assets in these data centers to colocations in nine months. As part of this effort, production and non-production applications were to be split up between the two colocations, with minimal production application downtime. System host names were to be updated to align to new company standards, and applications not in use were to be decommissioned or archived. In addition, company required documentation was to be created for all new builds, functionality testing completed for all applications post migration and validation testing completed for all regulated applications.

The Challenge

THE CHALLENGE

For many applications, subject-matter experts were no longer available. Legacy servers, operating systems, and applications were no longer under manufacturing support. There was low resource morale due to company structure changes and an aggressive timeline to complete the migration. In addition, there were complex application dependencies to work through.

THE RESULTS

THE RESULTS

This data center migration was successfully completed two months ahead of schedule, with increased cost savings and a large effort to decommission servers and applications no longer in use. In 17 Move Groups, 20 weeks, we virtually migrated 900 AIX, Solaris, RHEL, ESX and Windows servers; 750 application instances; and 377 TB of data. This was through careful planning and scheduling of all application dependencies in appropriate move groups and migrating non-production environments prior to production. In addition, we migrated two NAS environments with 203 file systems and 134 TB of storage. We built new exchange and voice environments and migrated approximately 6800 exchange mailboxes and 5000 voice users. We decommissioned 430 servers and 40 applications, and we consolidated the footprint for 148 applications. CTM decommissioned 43 Oracle RAC Nodes and 155 ESX hosts as well. We also re-built a VMWare VDI environment and 775 VDI sessions.

Due to the extremely successful migration, the CIO of the company and the VP of Infrastructure requested CTM Technology Group tackle other large migration efforts for the organization.
